Darktrace, Chief Information Officer

B2B

Company background

Darktrace is a global leader in AI-powered cybersecurity, using self-learning technology to detect and respond to threats in real time. Headquartered in Cambridge, the business has scaled rapidly into a FTSE-listed organisation, serving thousands of customers worldwide. As growth accelerated, strengthening its internal technology capability became critical to sustaining global expansion and operational resilience.

The approach

The Up Group was appointed to identify a Chief Information Officer to lead Darktrace’s global IT function through its next phase of scale. This required a leader operating confidently at board level, with the ability to drive enterprise-wide transformation across systems, data and infrastructure—while enabling a fast-growing, AI-first business.

We conducted a global search, engaging senior technology leaders from high-growth software, data and digital businesses. Whilst covering scaled businesses and industry benchmarks, we prioritised leaders with proven experience in scaling technology functions within complex, product-led environments.

Working in close partnership with Darktrace’s leadership team, we iteratively refined the brief—aligning on the intersection of leadership capability, technical depth and cultural fit. The role was positioned as a rare opportunity to shape the internal technology strategy of a category-defining AI company at scale.

The impact

Terry Doyle was appointed as CIO, bringing deep experience in leading global technology organisations and delivering large-scale transformation.

His appointment has strengthened Darktrace’s executive team and accelerated the evolution of its internal technology platform—enhancing scalability, improving operational resilience and supporting the company’s continued global growth.
